Why employers leave HireRight
We pulled the 50 most recent HireRight reviews from Trustpilot, where candidates post, and the 50 most recent from G2, where employers post. The split is stark. All 50 Trustpilot reviews, from May to September 2026, are one star. On G2, employers average 4.7, and 45 of 50 rate it four stars or higher. HireRight works for the people who buy it and frustrates the people it screens, and that frustration reaches employers as delayed start dates.
Candidates describe long waits and repeated requests.
“I’ve been waiting almost three weeks for a report that was supposed to take 7 days.”Christen Rinell, Trustpilot, August 2026
“You fill stuff out and they say you hadnt sent it.”Trent Steel, Trustpilot, July 2026
Employers describe support, usability, and cost. One G2 reviewer says customer service got worse after HireRight moved to “a general customer service email platform.” Others report inconsistent answers, a hard-to-navigate interface, frequent forced password resets, and ordering checks one at a time.
“When I reach out to talk or live chat an agent to solve an issue, I am told different information from agents.”Verified G2 reviewer, museums and institutions, January 2026
“Only one and that is the final cost as it often is much more than what an initial fee is.”Verified G2 reviewer, higher education, June 2026

The 7 best HireRight alternatives
Checkr
Published pricing and the strongest candidate ratingThe self-serve platform: pay-as-you-go pricing published at $29.99, $59.99, and $94.99 per report, 200+ ATS and HR integrations with an API for bulk ordering, and the strongest candidate feedback of the three big names: candidates it invites rate it 4.7 on Trustpilot, and its unprompted reviews (1.4) edge out HireRight's (1.0). It is the most direct fix for HireRight's candidate experience and budgeting problems. It is not a fix for support: Checkr's own most common complaint is chat-first support with no phone line, and it also passes court fees through on top of package prices.

Like-for-like enterprise replacementThe closest replacement for a HireRight enterprise program: global coverage, regulated-industry depth, and a managed service, from the public company that absorbed Sterling in 2024. Don't count on better candidate reviews: Sterling's recent unprompted Trustpilot reviews average 1.1, close to HireRight's 1.0. Quote-only pricing, and ask which platform you'll run on now that the merger is complete.

Account-managed mid-market and enterpriseService-led screening with account management, for teams that miss having dedicated reps. Employers rate it around 4.4 on G2, and it is the largest privately held, minority-owned screener. Quote-only pricing. Its candidate reviews on Trustpilot sit around 1.3, so it doesn't solve the candidate-experience problem.

If losing dedicated support is why you're leavingAdvertises "dedicated, human support" in every program and no separate support fees, which addresses the complaint that HireRight moved to a general support inbox. Programs start at $5,000 with quotes based on hiring volume. G2 rates it 4.2, on only 14 reviews.

Service-first, with a large drug-screening networkPitches "service-first support from dedicated US-based teams" and a wide clinic network, useful for programs with heavy drug testing. Publishes package contents but not prices, and its Basic package passes court fees through. Review volume is too thin to judge quality from the outside.

For Canada and UK hiringThe fit if international turnaround is part of the problem and your hiring is in Canada or the UK, where Certn runs native checks. When to stay with HireRight
Employers genuinely like HireRight: 45 of its 50 most recent G2 reviews rate it four stars or higher. If your program depends on its regulated-industry and global depth, your contract has years left, or your complaints are about interface friction rather than candidates or cost, a conversation with your account team may beat a migration. Switching means new contracts, integrations, adjudication rules, and candidate communications.
If published pricing and candidate experience are what you're after, Checkr is the self-serve option with the strongest candidate rating here. Read its full review record, critical reviews included, before you decide.

HireRight alternatives FAQ
What are the best HireRight alternatives?+
For a like-for-like enterprise program, First Advantage, which now includes Sterling. For published pricing and a self-serve platform, Checkr. For dedicated human support, Mitratech AssureHire or ClearStar. For Canadian or UK hiring, Certn.
Why do people complain about HireRight?+
Mostly candidates, about delays and communication. All 50 of the most recent HireRight reviews on Trustpilot (May to September 2026) are one star, and they describe weeks-long waits, being asked for documents they'd already sent, and support that's hard to reach. Employers rate HireRight well on G2, but their dislikes include a harder-to-use interface, support that moved from individual reps to a general inbox, and final costs above the initial fee.
Is there an FCRA-compliant alternative to HireRight?+
Every alternative on this page is a consumer reporting agency subject to the Fair Credit Reporting Act, like HireRight itself. Compliance is the baseline, not a differentiator. The differences are in pricing transparency, candidate experience, support model, and coverage.
Is Checkr better than HireRight?+
For most small and mid-size employers, the public evidence favors Checkr: published pricing, same-day self-serve signup, 200+ integrations, and stronger candidate feedback: invited candidates rate it 4.7, and its unprompted reviews edge out HireRight's (1.4 vs 1.0). HireRight is still the better fit for programs that need its long-running regulated-industry and global depth. If support is your main problem, Checkr isn't the answer, because chat-first support is its most common complaint too.
How hard is it to switch from HireRight?+
Plan for the contract term, re-integrating your ATS, rebuilding adjudication rules and package definitions, and updating candidate communications. Keep HireRight running until the new vendor has completed a batch of real checks, and export your historical reports and I-9 records first; one G2 reviewer notes a backlog of legacy I-9 forms that hadn't migrated to HireRight's newer platform.
